1.1. Admission

1.1.3. What are the requirements for admission to US colleges and universities?

Each university has its own admission requirements. In general, the requirements are:

  • "Application form": Most application forms follow a similar format, and require you to provide personal information and your academic background. If you find unfamiliar terms, you may request assistance at the Educational Advising Center.
  • "Application fee": Almost all colleges and universities will require you to pay an application fee ranging from U$S20 to 100, which is non-refundable even if you are not accepted.
  • "Transcripts": This refers to your grades in high school or university. It has to be an original document from your Uruguayan school (with the stamp and signature in blue ink). If you can get it, it is useful to include a ranking of the students in your class. In the case of graduate students, you should also include as notarized copy of your diploma. The Educational Advising Center can provide an equivalence of grades, for a small fee. When the admitted student goes to register for courses at the US universities, he will be asked to show a certified set of transcripts.
  • Financial documents: The universities require proof of the funds to pay for all your education. Generally, institutions ask for a letter of financial guarantee signed by a sponsor, and the sponsor's bank statement.
  • Standardized tests: Depending on your level and field of study, you will need to submit good scores for one of more of the following tests: TOEFL, SAT I, SAT II, GRE, GMAT, TSE, GRE subject tests.
  • Essay: Many universities require you to write an essay that describes your personal and academic background, special talents, future plans and the reasons for wanting to study in the US. This essay is mandatory for scholarship applicants and for graduate students.
  • Letters of recommendation: Most programs require the presentation of 2 or 3 letters of recommendation from teachers who know the applicant well and, in the case of graduate students, also from a recent employer.
  • Other documents: You may submit evidence of other awards, publications, work experience. Those applying to programs in visual or performing arts, must also send samples (copies, not originals) of their work.
