Fulbright U.S. Student Program
This program is designed to give recent graduates, master`s, doctoral candidates, and young professionals and artists opportunities for personal development and international experience. Candidates design their own study research project. Projects may include university course work, independent library and field research, special projects in the social or life sciences, or a combination of these. Candidates must demonstrate the capacity for independent study and research together with a general knowledge of Uruguay.
- Grant Period
9 months – From March to November. Candidates are strongly encouraged to plan their projects for the academic year since universities are closed during December, January and February and, therefore, little academic work can be accomplished. An orientation seminar for grantees is held in March, at the beginning of the program.
Proficient spoken and written Spanish is required at the time of application. The ability to communicate with locals in Spanish greatly enhances the cultural experience.
Candidates are encouraged to initiate contact with the host institution of their preference and to include their letter of invitation or support with the application. The Universidad de la República (State University) is free and offers courses in any field of study or professional education. Round trip travel, monthly stipend and accident and sickness insurance. The grant is increased by USD 100 per month for one accompanying dependent and by USD 200 per month for two or more accompanying dependents.
